A Visit Home

Five years is a long time. I’d last visited home before the covid stuff, but I eventually got home to see family and friends, eat a lot, and spend some time with my beloved Australian nature this August. I could write about everyone and everything as a detailed summary, but I feel it’s December now, and time has passed. No need to write about the details. Just tell that it was the highlight of my year, and I want to say thank you to all.

I will say I had the most amazing experience with this beautiful Square-tailed Kite who didn’t care about me standing right in front of it when it came and broke off nesting materials, then circled all around me. What a wonderful experience.

Enjoyed a nice afternoon at Queens Park back on October 2nd. These flower gardens were created for the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers which had already finished by the time we got there. (The week before?) Anyway, it was still well worth the visit on a nice spring day.

Both my mum and I took these photos. The first six are by her. She used her Sony RX100iii and I  used my D800.

Scaly-breasted Lorikeet

 These pictures were taken through a window earlier this year. Although many Australian species are suffering from development some are fairing well with the trend of native plants being grown in suburban gardens. Some lorikeet species such as this Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, are regular visitors in the many gardens in south-east Queensland. If you plant native trees, they will come.
In Niigata, I went for a walk at Fukushimagata last Monday but things were warm and quiet (Except for a festival!). Apart from a sprinkling of ducks out on the wetlands I saw a young Northern Goshawk hiding in the reeds and later missed getting shots of an adult attacking flocks of starlings and sparrows. Too quick for my lens…with electric poles and cables in front of the subject….excuses…
Disappointed that trees had been cleared there and was told that they will knock down the observatory to build a new one in the middle of winter until April…..just when it’s being used the most.

Cooler the last two days so I’m hoping migrations will be obvious soon.
