Flu
A week has passed since I went to Hyoko. It was very disappointing to find it has been closed since December because of Bird Flu. Bird Flu was found in Niigata at the end of November. I think it is just a precautionary. Many birds were out there, I just couldn’t enter and maybe it is safer to stay away.
It is sad for the birds because I’m sure they miss the free handouts provided by visitors. I read that a lot of poultry had been destroyed. Let’s hope it is no longer around.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Queensland, Australia August 9, 2016 |
When you don’t expect it, expect it. We were walking around feeding kangaroos at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary when I heard lots of bird alarms and the birds started scattering. I looked up and saw the above pair of White-bellied Sea-eagles as they charged in overhead. Unfortunately, I had my camera settings set for close-ups of captive kangaroo and wasn’t prepared for action. The eagles went right over us then started circling behind a big tree. I was calling out to the people around me and a young woman was grateful that I pointed them out and took some pics too. The last thing you expect to see at the zoo are wild animals. Just shows you how great Australia is!

I want a big new spotting scope. Either Zeiss, Swarovski, or Leica will do. The above goshawk looked fantastic through my little scope but I imagined a nice, intimate portrait with snow and dead reeds would have been nice. Looking through my scope the breeze was blowing the reeds in and out of the way and the soft feathers on the hawk’s chest were fluffed up. The goshawk was interested in the ducks on the water and its yellow eyes peered through the reeds, sometimes almost directly at us.

I got ready with my D7100 and 300 f4 when it looked like flying anf it came right at me. I messed up though, the camera just got stuck on the background.
I lost focus after this shot and didn’t regain it until it had almost passed me.

I only brought my little scope and D7100 with the Nikkor 300 f4. These photos show why I like that set up. I wasn’t ready for the goshawk.
Anyway. It was a fruitful outing.
