Mt Yamamoto Raptor Migration 2020

We have had a nice Silver Week holiday to start the week. We went to Mount Yamamoto near Ojiya, Niigata as we do every year to see the raptor migration. I’ve been really looking forward to it this year. Yesterday was bit of a let-down, however. It was very dull, cloudy and cool. No thermals, so very few migrating raptors. I think we saw one Oriental Honey Buzzard, 5 Grey-faced Buzzards, and one Japanese Sparrowhawk. (This doesn’t include the always present Black-eared Kites, which are always around everywhere you go!) Today was much better. It was overcast and not good for photography, but a few thermals got some birds moving. Quiet at the start, but by 11am, there was a constant stream of Honey Buzzards and lots of Grey-faced Buzzards, with a sprinkling of the pre-mentioned sparrowhawks. I haven’t bothered going through all the raptor shots. many are underexposed and highly cropped. Only good to keep for the record books. I wonder if any of the Honey Buzzards will make it to Western Australia?
