Adult Goshawk Hunting

I guess I’ve been spending a bit of time this winter trying to capture raptors hunting. I went to two different places yesterday and found it was fairly quiet. About 20 minutes before I was going to call it a day, I decided to look for special ducks amongst all the common ones taking it easy around the feeding area at Hyoko. Suddenly, from the back of the lake, thousands of birds parted in all directions. With the thousands of ducks, Great Egrets, Grey Herons and Great Cormorants began to evacuate in a panic. I knew something was coming but it was difficult to see with so many birds going in all directions. I have been watching harriers and young goshawks and even a peregrine hunting in the same area but nothing had caused such panic like this. Then I realised that zig-zagging low over the water was the pale outline of an adult Northern Goshawk. I’ve been wanting flight shots of an adult for years but they are elusive. I have many photos of young goshawks but few of the striking adult. It flew very fast and direct. After a miss near to the unaware tourists feeding the ducks, it turned sharply, then stepped on the gas and disappeared. It all occurred in seconds. Please watch the slideshow below:
