Rain, Hail, or Shine

3pm feeding of the wild birds
Hyoko, Niigata, Japan, December 30, 2011

Hyoko is a small lake in a community on the outskirts of Niigata city. In the winter months the locals give food, (rice husks), to the wild birds. Visitors can also buy packets of rice husks to feed the birds. It happens every day regardless of the weather. I think, from memory, the feeding times are 9am, 11am and 3pm.

  1. My goodness, that's a lot of waterfowl. I suppose the protective gear isn't just to ward off the weather!

  2. Wow look at all those Pintail! Do you get any rare or unusual species in the duck flocks?

Wow that looks more like a zoo and natural habitat! I'm thinking the same thing with Stu. There might be some rare ducks hiding among that tight flock, but then again it must be really difficult to pick them out.
